New York Stage Casting Update: Feb 23, 2010

Feb. 24 and 25, 2010 from 6 – 8:30 PM, Just come on one of these days, and sign in when you arrived at the location. We are only seeing Non-Equity Actors. Location: Transfiguration Church in Chinatown, Manhattan. Transfiguration Church lunchroom (right next to the auditorium) at 29 Mott Street in the heart of Chinatown, entering from the side door on Moscos Street. (The first door on your right when you walk down the gentle slope of Moscos Street. Over the door, you’ll see the sign that says: Transfiguration Church.) AUDITION PREPARATION: 1. A 1 - 2 minute contemporary monologue. 2. Martial Art or Dance Routine to showcase the talent’s experience and flexibility. (There will be no CD player on location. If preparing a dance routine, feel free to use ipod/walkman). 3. If auditioning for the role of “Little Smokey,” please prepare to sing a 16 bars song (a capella, no need to bring sheet music as there will be no accompanist provided) Note: "Little Smokey" is the only non-fighting character, but will be required to learn a Chinese Dance Routine in the show. 4. Yangtze Repertory Theatre is holding open auditions for Laughing in the Wind. Laughing in the Wind, a cautionary tale that exposes the tragic consequences of ruthless power struggles, is based on one of the best-known martial arts novels throughout the Chinese-speaking world, by Jin Yong, the most popular writer of the genre. The production consists of 26 characters. We are looking to cast professional Actors of all ethnicity, age between 16 – 60, with backgrounds/training in Dance or Martial Arts to fill all 26 characters. Some actors will play multiple roles. Rehearsal: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings (5:30 - 9:30 PM) starting on Feb. 28 through April 25, 2010. Performances: 16 performances starting on Friday, April 30 through Sunday, May 23, 2010, mainly on Thursday through Sunday, with an additional show on Wednesday, May 19. Review each week in the evening before the show reopens. Compensation: $300 Stipend provided at the end of the Production, and 4 complimentary tickets to any of the shows. This is a Non-Equity production; however all cast & crew will be covered by the Volunteer Insurance. The production will be bi- or multi-lingual. Master Autonomy
– Male, Age Range 30 – 60. Head of the Blue Clan of the sacred Mountain Hua. Although he known for his cultured and refined manner, he is actually a narrow-minded, selfish and power-hungry hypocrite.

Mistress Autonomy – Female, Age Range 30 – 60. Master Autonomy's Wife. A devoted wife and mother, upright and honest. Coral – Female, Age Range 16 – 20s. Master Autonomy’s Daughter. She is Little Fox's childhood playmate and is initially his love interest. She marries Ping later as she feels that his gentlemanly personality resembles that of her father's.

Little Fox – Male, Age range 18-30s. The scruffy, happy-go-lucky protagonist of the story. He is raised as an orphan and becomes the number one disciple at the Blue Clan of the sacred Mountain Hua.

Ping – Male, Age range 16 - 30s. An ambitious young man who joins the Blue Clan. Master Cool – Male, middle-aged. One of the protagonists in the play. Calculated but well-controlled.

Master Liberty – Male, middle-aged. Former Head of the Sun Moon Cult. He instills fear and panic into the hearts of many, including his own followers.

Ying Ying – Female, Age Range 16 -20s. Daughter of Master Liberty. She later becomes Little Fox’s love interest. Beautiful and intelligent, she’s highly regarded in the Sun Moon Cult.

Master Qu – A respected elderly member of the Sun Moon Cult. A musician and artist.

Little Smokey – Female, Age Range 13 – 20. Master Qu's granddaughter.

Other Principle and Supporting - Age range between 16 – 60. Dance or Martial Arts background a must.

Stone: Male, 30-45. Baritone. Stine’s protagonist in his novel and his alter ego. A private eye detective and ex-cop whose hard shelled grittiness is matched by a sex appeal and deep sensitivity. Must have some hand –to-hand combat training. A Humphrey Bogart type.

Gabby/Bobbi: Female, 25-40. Alto with belt. Gabby is Stine’s wife. She is sharp, confident and independent although constantly hurt. Bobbi is Stone’s soul mate and ex-wife who starts as a nightclub singer and ends up as a prostitute. Looking for a Vivien Leigh or Mary Astor type.

Donna/Oolie: Female, 20-35. Mezzo with strong belt. Donna is Buddy’s secretary and Oolie is Stone’s secretary. Both are brassy, hard working women who are constantly taken advantage of by the men they work for. A Martha Raye or Eve Arden type.

Buddy Fidler/Irwin S. Irving: Male, 30-60. Baritone. Buddy is a mega-movie producer/director ala David O. Selznick. Irwin is a womanizing movie mogul. Both men are more concerned with money and product before integrity and art.

Carla/Alaura Kingsley: Female, 30-40. Mezzo. Carla is Buddy’s glamorous movie star wife and Alaura is a femme fatale and the wife of the older millionaire, Luther Kingsley. She exudes mystery, class, and sex. A Lana Turner type.

Avril Raines/Mallory Kingsley: Female, 18-25. Mezzo with strong belt. Avril is a Hollywood starlet whose looks far exceed her intelligence. Mallory is the seductive and impetuous daughter of Luther Kingsley and step-daughter of Alaura. Looking for an Ann Margret or Grace Kelly type.

Pancho Vargas/Lt. Munoz: Male, 30-45. Bari-tenor. Vargas is a popular Latin actor ala Fernando Lamas who ends up playing Munoz in the film. Munoz is a police lieutenant and ex partner of Stone’s. Must be a good mover.

Jimmy Powers/Peter Kingsley: Male, 20-40. Tenor. Jimmy Powers is a crooner/matinee idol. A young Mel Torme or Perry Como. Peter Kingsley is the charming, yuppie son of Luther Kingsley and step-son of Alaura. Looking for a strong singer.

Werner Krieger/ Luther Kingsley/ Gaines: Male, 50-70. Any vocal type. Werner is an older actor who ends up playing Luther in the film. Luther is a wealthy industrialist in the process of dying. Gaines is a police commissioner.

Angel City 4: Four dynamic singer/mover/actors who are experienced in tight jazz harmonies ala The Manhattan Transfer. They act as narrators, characters in both worlds, and their own four part singing group: 2 men, 2 women – Soprano and Alto: The two women will also play all of the other female parts: Margaret, Margie, Bootsie, Anna, Employees on Set, Club Patrons, Party Guests, etc. Tenor and Bass: The two men also play many other roles including: Mahoney, Yamato, Gilbert, Shoeshine Boy, Employees on Set, Club Patrons, Party Guests, etc.

The Sherman Playhouse is holding auditions for their production of Enchanted April. Producer: Matthew Barber. Director: Susan Abrams. Author: Elizabeth von Arnim. Rehearsals begin March 1 with performances running from April 23 to May 15 on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as Sunday, May 2. Set in 1922, Enchanted April delightfully brings together four uniquely different women escaping harsh, rainy, war-scarred London to the warm sun and blooming wisteria of the Italian countryside. Leaving husbands and societal obligations behind, the desperate Hampstead housewives Lotty and Rose, severe Mrs. Graves, and seductive Lady Caroline, along with some unexpected guests, learn to appreciate each other while rediscovering how to laugh and love under the Italian sun.
