The 25Th Annual Putnam County (Bergen County Players)

Bergen County Players presents THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Music and Lyrics by William Finn Book by Rachel Sheinkin Director, Larry Landsman Musical Director, Steve Bell

THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE is a hilarious tale of overachievers' angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show's Tony Award-winning creative team has created the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky yet charming cast of outsiders for whom a spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.

Rehearsals: Rehearsals are scheduled to begin and of June. Performances: Sept. 8 – Oct. 2 (14 performances). Requirements: Spellers must be 18+ years of age. A headshot/picture is appreciated but not required. Please prepare an excerpt of a song (16-32 bars) that best represents your voice and bring sheet music for the accompanist in the proper key. A contemporary Broadway or pop genre song is preferred but not required. No a’cappella or recorded music auditions please. You may use a 1-2 minute comedic monologue, however a monologue is NOT required. Auditioners also should dress comfortably and be prepared to move. You will take part in a brief improvisation. NO ROLES HAVE BEEN PRE-CAST; ALL ROLES ARE OPEN. Callbacks will include readings from the script & singing a song from the show. Please note: there is no chorus in this production.

Seeking:
The Students (18-30) Marcy Park (B3 - E5 soprano/mezzo-soprano) – The ultimate over-achiever, Marcy has never been given another option. She comes from an Asian American family where excellence is expected and so simply produced. A parochial school student, she assumes God, too, expects perfection. She sees herself as a mass of problems but she keeps them to herself. Having moved often because of her parents work, she knows she can beat the local competition. She made it all the way to ninth place in Nationals last year. Marci is driven to succeed. She sleeps three hours a night. Her many talents include dance, martial arts and baton twirling, among others. Special skills a plus, showcased in “I Speak Six Languages.”

Leaf Coneybear (A2 - G4 baritenor) – (Also plays Carl Grubenierre) A second runner-up, he never expected to compete here today because he thinks he’s "not that smart.” Home-schooled with his many siblings, everything about this public bee is an adventure for him, from meeting the other kids to showing off his homemade clothing, to each moment of unexpected attention. He may have severe ADD but delights in his own wandering focus. He spells words correctly while in a trance. Leaf doesn’t expect to win but he finds absolutely everything incredibly amusing. His mother has made him take his protective helmet to the bee. (Great comic role)

William Barfee (Eb3 - Bb4 tenor) – Chronically congested and allergic to everything, he has a host of health problems and a lot to prove. Loud and combative as a defensive posture, he is the big kid who becomes a bully to avoid being picked on (though he often gets picked on anyway so gets into a lot of fights). His parents are divorced and William does not expect kindness from anyone but his mother. He is noticed on the spelling circuit for his remarkable “Magic Foot” technique – spelling words out on the floor with his foot. A Spelling Bee finalist last year, he was eliminated because of an ill-timed allergic reaction to peanuts and he’s here for vindication. He takes an unexpected journey by coming to care for someone else – developing a crush on Olive. When he finally sees outside his own needs for perhaps the first time, it shakes him fundamentally.

Olive Ostrovsky (B3 - F#5 soprano) – (Also plays Leaf’s siblings) A word lover, Olive has a fairly quiet life. An only child whose mother left her and her work-aholic father to live in an ashram in India, Olive spends a lot of her time alone. She fills some of that time reading the dictionary – the words bring her comfort, as does the idea of the vastness of the world the book contains. During the first half of the bee, she often peers into the audience to see if her father, who is delayed at work, has made it yet. She starts enormously shy but slowly blossoms.

Chip Tolentino (C3 - B4 tenor) – (Also plays Jesus Christ) A boyscout and reigning spelling champion of Putnam County, relatively athletic and social, he expects things to come easily to him until an unfortunate mishap results in his early elimination. Lately though, he’s been going through some weird changes, and things are slipping out of his control (ie. puberty and a major attraction to girls).

Logainne Schwartzandgrubennierre (C4 - D5 soprano) – (Also plays Leaf’s mom) She is the youngest and most politically aware speller who is driven by internal and external pressure – but above all a desire to win to make her two overbearing fathers (from whom she takes her combined last name) proud. She lisps, is somewhat of a neat freak, is a little uncomfortable in her body, has some tics, but still manages to strike a strong presence with her political awareness and keen sense of justice. Having drilled words for hours a day, she is aware of everything that passes in the room.

The Adults (30-40) Mitch Mahoney (E3 - A4 (B4) (Tenor) – (Also plays Olive’s Dad and Dan Schwartz) With a tough “street” demeanor, Mitch, an African American ex-convict, appears an odd choice to be the bee’s official “comfort counselor,” but it is part of his community service assignment. Mitch has no idea how to offer comfort, but does increasingly wish there was a way to make the kids feel better about losing. He hands out juice boxes to the losing students.

Rona Lisa Peretti (C#4 - Ab5 soprano) – (Also plays Olive’s Mom) Putnam’s long-time spelling bee hostess, the number-one realtor in Putnam County, and 3rd annual Putnam County spelling champion. She loves children, but she can be very stern when it comes to dealing with Vice Principal Panch. This is her day to be queen. From her perspective she keeps the bee running smoothly, upholds protocol, and conveys crucial information to the audience. Her interest in the competition is unflagging and drives it forward. She thinks of this as a complex cerebral sporting event, and she wants the audience to understand every twist and turn. A little concerned when the substitute word pronouncer arrives, she knows she has to step up her game to make the day a success. Ms. Peretti herself won the Third Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee by spelling "syzygy." Comedic improvisational skills preferred.

Douglas Panch (non singing role) – Vice Principal Douglas Panch is frustrated with his life. After five years' absence from the Bee, he returns as judge. There was an "incident" at the Twentieth Annual Bee, but he claims to be in "a better place" now, thanks to a high-fiber diet and Jungian analysis. The drive of the young spellers is alien to him. He never found anything that important. Stuck in his current job, eagerly waiting a promotion that isn’t coming, he was not happy to get the call this morning that he was needed to substitute; but he starts the bee eager to do well, to redeem himself for past mistakes and to impress the local hostess, Rona Lisa, with whom he is infatuated. Excellent improvisational skills and comedic timing required.

ABOUT THE SHOW: This is a very funny, fast-paced, and wickedly twisted musical comedy with 8 distinct female roles. There is no “ensemble”. With the exception of the non-singing role of Miss Block, all the characters have solo songs. PLEASE NOTE: We are looking to cast a male performer in the role of Sylvia St. Croix.

Seeking:
Tina: an 8-year old “triple threat”, loaded with talent and manipulative to the core, she is sickeningly sweet but underneath, is a remorseless psychopath. Range: F# below middle C to E one octave above middle C.

Sylvia St. Croix: The stereotypical “in-your-face” talent manager, who is obsessed with making Tina a star. For this role, we are looking to cast a man in drag. Range: A one octave below middle C to E above middle C (or a woman with Bea Arthur’s vocal quality).

Miss Thorn: A wannabe actress who had to settle for teaching 3rd grade, she is the director of the school play. Her integrity in casting is questionable. Range: E below middle C to B above middle C.

Louise Lerman: The student who beats out Tina for the lead in the school play, she has limited talent and is larger than Tina. Range: Middle C to B Flat above middle C. Lita Encore: Judy’s adoptive mother, a theatre critic with a poison pen, who hates musicals. An Ethel Merman-type with a strong belt. Range: E below middle C to D one octave above middle C.

Eve: Efficient personal assistant to Broadway star, Ginger. She wants Ginger’s life, and copies her every mannerism. May double as Louise. Range: F# below middle C to C above middle C.

Miss Block: A reporter who wants to do a story about Ginger’s past. This is a non-singing role, and may be doubled with Miss Thorn.

Please email submissions to Holly Buczek, Casting Director at hdbauditions@gmail.com or holly@hdbcasting.com. NO hard-copy submissions or phone calls to the Vital Office! Auditions will be by appointment only, Tuesday, January 25th and Wednesday, January 26th--with callbacks on Thursday the 27th. Vital Theatre Company seeks a cast of vibrant singer/actors for the closing musical of their 2010/2011 family season, AWESOME ALLIE: FIRST KID ASTRONAUT! Yesterday Allie was just a normal kid, but today she’s headed into outer space! With the help of her trusty talking dog Captain Chaos, and Rover the Dancing Robot from Mars, Allie's on a mission across the solar system to save Earth, and maybe learn some things about science along the way. But she'd better be home in time for dinner! Grab your space suit and get ready for an adventure that's out of this world! Book by Scott Elmegreen and music and lyrics by Drew Fornarola. Directed by Jeremy Dobrish. Only non-Equity performers should apply. All ethnicities encouraged to submit.

We will see only adult actors to play all roles.

SEEKING STRONG SINGERS FOR THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
ALLIE. Allie is an inquisitive 9 year old from Skokie Illinois. Part dreamer, part loner, she is singled out by an outerspace alien and sent on a mission by the US government to be the first citizen to make contact! On her trip she learns a great deal about science, the universe, and the power of friendship! Adult actress to play young. Mezzo to “E”, Singer who can both belt and mix.

CAPTAIN CHAOS: What better co-pilot into outer space than a nasa-trained, talking space dog? Although it seems a bit far-fetched to Allie at first, she soon learns that a dog can be an astronaut’s best friend! Captain Chaos helps Allie journey through the milky way with cool dance moves and way more bark than bite. Adult actor to play canine. Tenor or Bari-tenor.

THE PRESIDENT: The President of the United States is, needless to say, a very busy man. He is in shock when the US is contacted by an extra-terrestrial, and even more in shock when he finds out the alien would like to meet with a small girl from Illinois! He recognizes the importance of this moment for the country and vows to get Allie into outer space. The president is a bit bumbling and overwhelmed at times, but definitely sincere. Adult actor. Baritone--bonus points if you can beatbox.

ALLIE’s MOM/ROVER 2: Allie’s mom is both supportive and caring of Allie. She makes the decision to let Allie go into outer space, but reminds her to always keep her gaze on home. Allie’s mom doubles as Rover 2, a “female” space bot left behind on Pluto by Russian cosmonauts! Adult actress. Mezzo.

ALIEN/MRS. QUARK: The first alien to make contact with the US, is a bit mysterious, but seems friendly! She will only talk with Allie, and everyone is wondering what she wants! This track also doubles as Mrs. Quark, an elementary science teacher of Allie’s, who helps her to navigate the stars via satellite. Adult actress. Alto.

ROVER/SECRET SERVICE AGENT BOB: Rover is a forgotten and lost Russian Space Bot, left behind in outer space on a mission in the 1970’s. He is lonely, but Allie befriends him, and he soon joins her journey to Pluto! Rover is a disco dancer and ideally speaks with a Russian accent. This track doubles as Secret Service Agent Bob, who may look big and imposing, but he is kind and considerate at heart. Adult actor. Tenor, star disco singer. Dance training a plus.

The Eleventh Hour Theatre Company is seeking male and female dancers and singers all ages for a workshop of the choruses from a new translation of the Greek tragedy Agamemnon. The workshop will consist of four weeks of rehearsals in February with performance for an invited audience on the evening of Sunday February 27th. There will be four 4-hour rehearsals a week, probably during the day, with a fifth rehearsal during the final week. There is a $100 stipend. As was the practice in ancient Greece, the choruses of the play are set to music and involve dance and other stylized movement. The translation by Alexander Harrington with music by Michael Sirotta was produced at La MaMa in 2009. It was difficult for the audience to understand the lyrics. This workshop is focused on addressing this problem: among other things, elaborate choreography will be assigned to people who are not singing. All chorus members must sing and move adequately. However, some performers will do the more demanding dancing and only have to sing adequately and others will do the more demanding singing and only have to dance adequately. All performers will have to act well enough to tell a story through song.

The most frightening thing? They love it. In fact, Barry's show is so popular it's about to go into national syndication, and his producer is afraid that Barry will say something that will offend the sponsors. This, of course, makes Barry even more outrageous. Disturbing, funny, moving, off-beat, and totally entrancing,

Casting non-union actors for OFF THE REALNESS a new play by Nick Gandiello directed by Lucia A. Peters to be produced at the New School for Drama as part of the 2011 New Voices Festival. Addy, a rough white kid from the suburbs, has earned himself a spot in a rap concert with hip-hop star K-Raise. If he can reunite with his estranged brother Ty and reestablish their rap duo together, he has a shot at a record deal. But when Ty starts questioning the violence in Addy’s lyrics, truths about the brothers' past, identities, and hip-hop itself are explosively revealed, and Addy must decide how far he will go to prove that he is Real.

SEEKING:
K-RAISE - Black. Late 20s. An up-and-coming rap star who intends to take over the hip-hop industry. Immense in physicality and behavior. Despite his wild bravado, deep wounds have made him discretely compassionate.

GRAY - Black, early 30s. K-Raise’s unofficial bodyguard and confidant. Big guy with jail time in his bones. He rarely sees the need to speak, and is confident and direct enough to secure the space around him with merely a look. Intensely loyal.

KWASI - Black. 18 or 19. Addy’s friend and DJ. A little guy with a big smile. Friendly, eager to please, and perhaps a little naive. He produces hip-hop for his love of the music, and makes no effort to be something he is not.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8045649029863826710.post-28921674522589907062010-12-01T23:02:00.001-05:002010-12-01T23:10:02.370-05:00New York Stage Casting Update: Dec 1st

URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL Directed and Musically Directed by CTG veteran Clifford Parrish with Choreography by Megan Fiorentinos, this Tony winning satirical comedy musical, with music by Mark Hollmann, lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and book by Kotis satirizes the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and municipal politics. The unconventional plotline shatters audience expectations of a pleasant ending. Production Dates: Opens Friday February 25, 2011 and runs Fridays/Saturdays at 8pm - Sundays at 2pm through March 20, 2011. Plot Breakdown: In grim Gotham-like city of the future, a 20-year drought has occurred. As a result, the government has banned private toiletries and the citizens must use pay-to-pee toilets regulated by a monopolistic company, the Urine Good Company, which charges exorbitant prices. Bobby Strong, the assistant custodian at the poorest urinal in town, decides enough is enough. With the help of the daughter of the CEO of the Urine Good Company, Hope Cladwell, Bobby ends up leading a rebellion, which frees the citizens. This is a very choral show, so those who enjoy choral singing will have a great time. If you have any questions, you may contact director, Clifford Parrish at (908) 696 0411 or on Facebook. Music and Lyrics: Greg Morrison and Lisa Lambert. 1st rehearsal: 12/27/10 (evenings and weekends, no holidays). Run: 1/29/11 – 2/20/11 (Thur-Sun, 16 performances). Sunday, December 12: Callbacks – Time TBD. THE DROWSY CHAPERONE: It all begins when a die-hard musical theater fan plays his favorite cast album on his turntable, and the musical literally bursts to life in his living room, telling the rambunctious tale of a brazen Broadway starlet trying to find, and keep, her true love.
The Drowsy Chaperone is a wildly entertaining tribute to jazz age musicals.

Seeking:
Man in Chair: M.: 30s - 50s. Our narrator. Show tune aficionado and self-proclaimed expert. Perhaps a bit manic and slightly agoraphobic, he seeks to chase his blues away by listening to a recording of a fictional 1928 musical comedy: The Drowsy Chaperone. Underneath his occasionally tart exterior exists a lot of heart. Sings only briefly. Role originated by Drowsy co-author Bob Martin.

Janet Van de Graaff/Jane Roberts: F.: 20s to early 30s. The bride who is giving up her successful career as a follies girl to marry her sweetheart. A lovely-yet-quirky ingénue. A young talented triple threat. Must be a strong dancer and singer. Special skills anywhere from playing musical instruments, gymnastics, tumbling, juggling, baton twirling, etc. are helpful and strongly encouraged to be noted. Alto G3-Ab. Role originated by Sutton Foster.

The Chaperone/Beatrice Stockwell: F.: Late 30s to early 50s. Janet’s glamorous martini-loving confidante. A bit Vera Charles with the heart of Auntie Mame. A diva to end all divas. Cynical quips are her specialty. British. Must be an extremely strong comedienne, have great timing and be a fabulous singer (belters a must). Strong mover. Alto F3-D5. Role originated by Beth Leavel.

Robert Martin/Percy Hyman: M.: 20s to early 40s. The Groom. A dashingly debonair, handsome classic 1920s leading man. Slightly quirky, a bit dim and unassuming. Must be an extremely strong tapper. Roller skating skills a plus. Tenor C3-Ab4.

Aldolpho/Roman Bartelli: M.: 30s – 40s. Over-the-top stereotypical latin lothario-type. Vain and a bit buffoonish. Must have great comic timing. Strong Mover/dancer. Bass/Baritone with a great falsetto A#2-G4 (higher notes can be performed calla foce).

Mrs. Tottendale/Ukulele Lil: F.: 30s to 50s. A scatterbrained society hostess and dowager. Not dumb, but certainly ditsy. Think Billie Burke or Natalie Schafer. Bubbly and optimistic, she gathers guests to her estate to celebrate the nuptials at hand. Alto G3-Db5. Moves well. While not necessary, guitar/ukulele experience is a plus. Role originated by Georgia Engel.

Underling/Noel Fitzpatrick: M.: 30s to 50s. Mrs. Tottendale’s butler. Cynical, dry and comically dignified. So English, he makes Noel Coward look like he’s from Coney Island. Tenor Ab2-G4. Moves well.

George/Cyril Devlin: M.: 20s to 40s. Robert’s anxious best man in charge of all the last minute details of the wedding. A strong character-type. The ultimate sidekick. Must be an extremely strong tapper. Tenor F3- Bb4.

Victor Feldzieg/Jack Adler: M.: Late 30s – 60s. A harried Broadway producer of a Ziegfeld Follies-type of revue. He is very unhappy that his leading lady is giving up the stage for love and will stop at nothing to end the nuptial plans. Bari-tenor Db3-Db4. Moves well.

Kitty/Sadie Adler F.: 20s – 30s. A dimwitted 1920s chorine and Feldzieg’s companion. There is really not a whole lot going on upstairs, but would give anything to be the star of Feldzieg’s Follies. Part Gracie Allen, part Jean Harlow. Good dancer. Soprano Bb3-F5. Gangster #1 and Gangster #2/The Tall Brothers: M.: 20s – 30s. A classic vaudeville duo with a strong sense of physical comedy (think 2 out of the Three Stooges). They pose as pastry chefs to put the pressure on Feldzieg to end the wedding. All heights, physical types and ethnicities strongly encouraged. Must be strong movers/dancers. Tenors Db3-Gb4.

Trix the Aviatrix/Gwendoline Hall F.: Late 20s to late 30s. The somewhat “butch” 1920s autopilot that saves the day and flies the company off to Rio. Think Amelia Earhart as played by Ethel Waters, but not necessarily African American. Ab3-Eb5 Belter.

Ensemble: M & F: 20s to 30s. Seeking two men and two women to play members of Mrs. Tottendale’s household staff, reporters and aviators. All must be excellent singers and extremely strong dancers.
NOTE: One of these gentlemen will play the role of the Superintendent.

Directions: Take the R to 9th St. or the F to 4th Ave. in Brooklyn. The R can be accessed at the Pacific/Atlantic station in Brooklyn which is served by the 2,3,4,5,N,B,D and Q trains from Manhattan.

www.chathamplayers.org. Synopsis: It’s the early 1980’s in Chicago where all cons, like magic acts, begin with subtle manipulation, but then slide into sleight of hand when the mark becomes distracted. In a world where talking can be idle and irrelevant, but also meaningful and foreshadowing, the tone of the “talking” is the defining qualifier. Life in this crucible is represented by a constantly present chalkboard: Top man gets a Cadillac – Bottom man gets “erased”. Success leads to opportunity for greater rewards – Failure becomes an inescapable trap, spiraling inevitably down – a theme in a minor key.

Seeking:
Ricky Roma (Salesman, 40s) Suave, successful, devious and out for himself.

Shelly Levine (Salesman, 50s/60s) Sinking desperately in tragic quicksand, his boastfulness will lead to humiliation.

John Williamson (Manager, 30s/40s) Without real sales experience, apparently a company man – but nevertheless willing to scam in his own interest.

Dave Moss (Salesman, 50s) Tough, crude, and too bitter to play well the hand he’s been dealt.

George Aronow (Salesman, 50s) Frustrated and meek, depressed but accepting, he is needy – but still has common sense.

James Lingk (married, 30s/40s) We meet him drinking alone. Sensitive, malleable to others and deeply flawed.

Detective Baylen (Police Officer, 40s) Experienced, no-nonsense cop. Strong – will use force when needed.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
