Open Auditions for female singers for The 1st National Tour of The Color Purple. Equity Production Contract, $1,509/week minimum. Producers: Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, Roy Furman, Quincy Jones. Casting: Telsey + Company. Prepare 16 bars of a standard that can be interpreted as soulful, or 16 bars of a gospel-type song. Must bring sheet music and a photo/resume stapled together. A piano accompanist will be provided. Equity audition procedures are NOT in effect. No Equity monitor provided. Producer runs all aspects of the audition. Seeking: Female Singers: For Understudy. Female, African-American 20s – 30s to understudy Celie, Nettie, Church Ladies and Church Soloist. Must have excellent high belt and soprano. Celie: Drives the story. Vulnerable, spirited, introverted, mischievous, seemingly passive but really not, has a deep, hard soul, believes that she is ugly, has a sense of humor which is sometimes wicked. She is an observer. Her eyes are very telling. Eventually breaks away from a life of mistreatment and finds love and independence. Needs a great belt singing voice with lots of soul. Nettie: Female, African-American, 20s. Attractive, adventuresome, feisty, educated. She has a powerful bond with her older sister, Celie. Forced by Mister to leave Celie, she starts a new life in Africa. Needs a commanding actress with a great belt singing voice. Off-Broadway.Currently running at New World Stages (formerly Dodger Stages). NOTE: There will be no nudity at this audition. The producer will run all aspects of this call.
