Legros Cultural Arts is seeking non-Equity African American actors for Black Girl. Writer: J.E. Franklin. Production will go up in September 2009. Paid Performances. Synopsis of Play Setting 1969): Trapped in a life which can lead nowhere, Billie Jean has dropped out of school and secretly taken a job as a dancer in a local bar, her ultimate goal being to become a ballet dancer. But her ambitions bring her into conflict with her envious sisters, both of whom have been locked into dreary marriages too early, and her mother, who has given up on her own children and now lavishes her care and affection on her “ foster daughters” industrious girls to whom she has transferred her own frustrated hopes.  Billie Jean must fight a multiplicity of prejudices, family, sex, color, class and economic to win an education and forge her own identity.  But with her grandmother’s strength and trust to embolden her, Billie Jean breaks free, establishing at last a tenuous but hopeful relationship with her mother an taking the first sure steps toward a life which will, at least, be of her own making.

Ruth Ann: 20 years old, 5’ 6”, 4 months pregnant, southern accent.

Mama Rosie: 38 years old, 5’ 3”, quick tempered, southern accent. She is loud and obnoxious and has an opinion on everyone around her, but she can’t for the life of herself see her own faults.

Mu’ Dear: 55 years old, 5’ 1”, authoritative and intolerant of nonsense.

Mr. Herbert: 65 years old, 5’ 1”, meek, southern accent. He is soft spoken with a docile and quiet demeanor. Wise he is not, but he stands up for what he believes is right.

Earl: 41 years old, 6’ 3”, southern accent, muscular, neat and well groomed.  He is dismissive and arrogant.

Netta: 21 years old, southern accent.  Her patience and keen intelligence are her best attributes.

Harvey
- a Caucasian male in his early 40s is our main character. He is a strong-willed and independent person, a self made man proud of his achievements. Even though he handles his life quite well, he has a well-known fondness for drinks and a few gambles. He’s a man of few words, concise and straight to the point. He never founded a family since he’s always been way too interested in women to only choose one.

Louie - is an undercover pawnbroker, loaning money at frightening rates. He's a fat Persian guy with an open shirt, gold chain and watches. Often sweating. (has a substantial conversation with the lead while driving a car, so driving is a must!)

Ralph - is a little crook living in the neighborhood, spending most of his time partying and drinking in clubs. He’s known for dealing drugs and being a second-rank, wannabe pimp. (Ralph has a heated conversation with the lead that goes a bit physical, being comfortable with this a must).

John - is a regular at the Blue and knows everyone there. When he arrives in front of the club, he meets John, an old friend who’s been working there for more than 20 years. He used to bartend and is now part of the management. He’s a chain smoker, laconic and old-fashioned guy.

The Barn Theatre in Montville, NJ, is casting for My Favorite Year. Book by Joseph Dougherty. Music by Stephen Flaherty, Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Directed by Scott Hart. His effort to keep Swann off the booze and out of the papers nearly drives him to the brink before he’s given an unexpected glimpse into Swann’s broken heart that teaches him about human frailty, comedy, love – and what made 1954 his favorite year.

KING KAISER Male, Late 30's to early 40's. Big, tall, physical and loud. Comic role. Catskill comic, Sid Ceasar-type, now host of the King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade, America's #1 TV show. Vocal range baritone.
SY BENSON Male, 40's+. A large man, dyspeptic. Comic role. Head writer, bully to all but King Kaiser. A chicken and pushover at heart. Vocal range baritone.
ALICE MILLER Female, 35+. Dry, comic, physical role. Writer on Comedy Cavalcade. She has no problem going toe-to-toe with King or anyone else. Vocal range low alto to D/belt.
HERB LEE Male, 35+. Rumpled, silent but very expressive. Comic, physical role. Writer on Comedy Cavalcade. Communicates through Alice. Has little dialog, but must be expressive and possess good comic timing.
KC DOWNING Female, early to mid 20's. A bright, attractive career girl. Assistant to the producer. The only "straight man" in a world of funny people. Pretty enough to be the "Breck Girl", Benjy's love interest. Must move well. Vocal range high alto light belt.
LEO SILVER Male, 50's+. Gray-haired, well dressed, antacid chewing producer of the Comedy Cavalcade. Comic role. Physically smaller than King, but the only one who comes close to controlling him and usually at his side. Vocal range baritone.
BELLE MAY STEINBERG CARROCA Female, 40's+. Benjy's mother. A large presence of a woman, generous of nature and proportion (think tall, big hair, big bust). A substantial beacon of Brooklyn society. Loud and a bit overbearing, always looks her best, if not a bit too much. Lainie Kazan-type. Comic role but with a touching quality. Vocal range high alto belt.
ROOKIE CARROCA Male, 40's+. Belle's husband, Benjy's step-father. Physically smaller than Belle. Must be able to pass as Filipino. Ex-wrestler. Comic role. Vocal range baritone.
UNCLE MORTY Male, 40's+. Benjy's uncle (Belle's brother). Loud, comic role (doubles in some ensemble scenes). Vocal range baritone.
AUNT SADIE Female, 40's+. Morty's wife. You should have no problem picking them out as a couple. Comic role (doubles in some ensemble scenes). Vocal range alto.
TESS Female, 16+. Swann's estranged daughter. Very pretty (doubles in some ensemble scenes).
STAGE/FLOOR MANAGER Male, 30's. Organized, yet frustrated type. Tries to be in control of entire cast and crew, but is difficult. Doubles as ensemble/dancer/singer.

Brundage Park Playhouse is holding auditions for its October production of Charles Dickens's GREAT EXPECTATIONS, adapted by Robert Johanson. One of the greatest novels in the English language, GREAT EXPECTATIONS is a story of pride and ambition blinding a soul to the true values of life. There are many memorable characters: Young Pip, the blacksmith's apprentice, whose secret benefactor gives him his great expectations of becoming a London gentleman; the mad Miss Havisham who shut herself up in her gloomy, haunted mansion when she was jilted on her wedding day; her adopted daughter, Estella, whom she has trained to break men's hearts; the gentle blacksmith, Joe, and his shrewish wife; the escaped convict, Magwitch, and the scarred man who is stalking him; the bumbling Herbert Pocket; the pompous Uncle Pumblechook; the austere lawyer, Jaggers, with his whimsical clerk, Wemmick; the murderous Orlick; kindly Biddy; arrogant Drummle; and a vast array of wonderfully actable roles. Gripping drama, delightful humor and a true Dickensian flavor all the while. Performance dates are October 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24 at 8:00 PM and October 18 and 25 at 2:00 PM.
